Grand Final

Hi Tuesday swingers,

Another season is done and dusted as Making a Racket overcame Beatles with Bite 2 sets to one. The huge support amongst the crowd was the key factor that drove them on. In the end it was a convincing win but left the door open under the challenge system. However being the sports we are at Beatles HQ we will not challenge. I note there was a breach of protocols with no drug testing performed on the night especially on Ged the Fed who was hot to trot . It was a break out match for the Fed who is obviously a late bloomer. Still think he was on something! He was ably supported by those solid hombres Rylan and Pat who were hell-bent on long and exhausting rallies. I know they wanted to wear out the oldies Bob and Margaret.

I understand that Pat has received an offer from a rival club next season and his currency has just gone up as a premiership player. Perhaps we need to go out and rattle the tins. But who leaves after winning a premiership. Yes Adam that’s right the last person was Buddy Franklin.

After 2 grand final defeats in a row a name change is in order for the Beatles to the Magpies. This could lead to a change in the pecking order. No pun intended.

Everybody starts from Ground zero next season. We will start selecting teams in mid-July for an early August start. We will be looking for new blood preferably the type that flows.

If you didn’t play this season let me know if you are interested or possess the necessary qualities.

cheers

Grand Final next Tuesday Night

Hi Tuesday Night swingers

The guru was moved to remark that with the transfer of just a few points there would have been 2 different grand finalists. The standard of tennis was through the roof and the spectators were in awe. Or at least they didn’t say much. However, the record books will show that Beatles with Bite (Bob Margaret and Yours sometimes truly) meet Making a Racket (Rylan, Pat and Ged) in next Tuesdays Grand final. The great Balls of Fire (Adam, Andrew and Jenny) and Monkeys (Isy, Rob and Glenn) were magnificent and certainly failed better than they have ever before. Their reputations are enhanced but it will be a long winter of discontent.

We understand that a devastated Adam Palmer will be off to see a hypnotist this week to make sense of it all and it will be interesting to see what they say to each other. His tennis was still good but his commentary was a bit off.

Grand final week will be big and I was going to check with Richard and Jonny what festivities have been organised.

Eleesa, I have organised with Rossdale for extra parking but please bring your camera and we can send photos of the impending traffic chaos.

In the event of a Grand Final wash out the team that did not lose a set in the semi-final is the obvious winner. We have always sort of done it this way. Not sure who that favours. Can you have a look at that Bob.

Come along to join the throng, and toast the Beatles with Bite at nights end.

Best to sum up with what Ernest Hemingway said “A man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. Sounds a bit sexist to me.

Tuesday night Grand Final

Hi Tuesday swingers,

Congratulations to “Oh Danny Boy” who won the grand final and by so doing took out the most prestigious title in tennis in greater Aspendale. Sorry St Louis. They did it in style by losing only one match during the season. Sorry to Rafa your records are falling but please don’t end up like Tiger Woods. Injuries and pain killers take their toll.  Alas, we did not sing the “song” as Adam Palmer was not there.

The match was full of drama with the “Smithsonians” winning the first set as Coby and Aya were on fire. The second set was on a knife edge when Danny hurt his twice reconstructed knee and had to come off. At lease it wasn’t Dan Menzel. Kate and Matene then had a monumental struggle with Coby and Rod as Aya was unable to watch from the stand. Matene and Kate prevailed 7 games to 5 and Rod was dragged off the court by Coby and Aya. The guru thought Rod had played well but this is big time tennis and there is no place for sentiment. The third set was an anti-climax 6 games to 1 as Matene and Kate played at full rat power and Aya had seized up after sitting out the second set.

Great effort by all concerned including the peanut gallery who did not miss a shot.

We will get back to all concerned about next season but will have a break from comp through July. Expect a start first or second week in August. I am happy to go down for a hit if the weather is good, but use the time to recover from injuries and shake out those mental demons.

Always next season.

cheers

Tonites Grand Final

Hi Tuesday swingers

The GF is tonite with the Smithsonians playing Oh Danny Boy. Should be a ripper with great weather forecast. I have to say that! Come down and join the fun. Palmer didn’t make it and after losing one of the best semi finals played in a long time, he shrugged off the disappointment to send us on a great magical mystery tour on Friday night. That strong forehand grip on the mike was the difference.

Also bad luck to Old Salts with their gun player Wayne injured at the death, although Coby was masking a sore shoulder. What intrigue and suspense.

The topic of conversation this week has been will Coby and Aya let Rod play, and how will Oh Danny Boy cope with Matene having a bad back. Will he play, how can he play. Is he Lazarus?

The carnage just goes on and on. Is the season too demanding or are our Tues swingers as soft as butter.

All will be revealed tonite.

cheers

Tuesday night Grand Final

Hi Tuesday night swingers

Another season is done and dusted and congratulations to “Only Up” (Elissa and Ged) for their victory, and Rafa –oops nearly forgot him- over the “Mak Truck” (Kerry Adam and Murray). The Mak truck battled hard and fought back from 5-2 to 5-4 in the first set but that was as good as it got. Kerry, you’re team has nothing to be ashamed of although it will likely leave scars for many years to come.

It does raise the question as to where “Only Up” goes from here. A name change is in order, perhaps “Only Down” is now appropriate.

Please I urge all of you to take a week off before preseason training. The guru and myself are happy to provide PT classes, and Richard and Jonny will work on your tennis skills and possibly develop some where none exist.

All bets are off with team selections next season although if you want to put a team in- go ahead. The Tennis One Aspendale Tuesday Night Selection Committee will meet around mid January 2017 to toss around names, argue, guess, and make out as though they know what they are doing. Ultimately they will select the teams.

Please let us know if you wish to be part of the new way in Tuesday night tennis next season, by return email in early January. We are working towards 10 teams and 5 courts, however precedence will still be given to adults over kids if numbers dictate.

This is not a political decision and we are still happy for the youngsters to put their names down but we do not believe the swamp needs draining.

Have a great festive season and this also is not a political statement.

cheers

Tennis Awards

1.       Tennis Humanatarian award goes to Closers for deciding to give other teams a go this season. Tremendous effort as they still played as though they were trying.

2.       Most improved goes to Elissa as she has started beating up on her opposition. We though last year she was a great person taking defeat so well but now we think she is just OK. Are we sick of her winning already. Another player who rose to great heights was Murray although that was more related to the height of his lobs. No wonder we got a lot of washouts and rain

3.       The kyrios award goes to the juddster for his outburst on the court, although I don't think even Kyrios would of disrespected such an important part of the community. Andrew is really a great guy and his bark is worse than his bite.

4.       Best club person goes to Mary for her assistance in turning the lights on one night. I know this was last season but there was nobody else this season who put their hand up. You could win it for the next 10 seasons easily Mary and not lift another finger.

5.       Most dedicated is a four way split with Rafa Ged Rod and Kate playing through a torrential downpour and it was lucky we had those skim balls so they could finish the match.

6.       Endurance award goes to Wayne Russell  Grant and Glenn for a 3 hour marathon where everybody had left and even the owls had enough and went off to bed.

7.       Best commentary again goes to Adam Palmer where his incredible knowledge came to the fore as he reeled off the precise moment when each net cord that went against his team occurred, and that was broadcast while he was playing. I was going to give Adam the spin award, as it goes with the commentary, but Matene must get the spin award as he had the ball spinning like a top. Perhaps he is rubbing something on his strings -a lolly?

8.       Life time Achievement Award. To a person who has done so much for the comp but never wins anything and probably never will. It's a backhanded compliment but not sure about that as they don't have a backhand. Can you guess this person.

Cheers Grant

Tuesday night tennis 29.11

Hi Tuesday night swingers

Last round of the season can you believe it. Pizza and awards night so please get down at 7.15 for 7.25 start. Pizza’s at 9.00PM with shot gun finish when the first match is over. Please have all 3 players down for the night  This week won’t really matter as the finalists have already been decided, although not their position and first week opponents, so celebrate hard and maintain focus on those celebrations. Please bring extra $5 for pizza and $2 for drinks. Congratulations to the Samurai Smiths, Full Metal Racquet, Closers and Bring It On, on tremendous seasons, only kidding actually and no finals for you. Nothing to be ashamed of but I wouldn’t discuss it with a lot of people. 5th place is up for grabs Bob so still a lot to play for. Big surprises were the Guru’s tip for glory, the Samurai Smiths, not there at the pointy end (excuse the pun) and the Closers closing in on a rare double of Premiers to Wooden spooners in one season. A proud moment for all concerned.

The four finalists should also not worry about the results this week as each have said that they are not frightened of the other three. The Guru said to me that this season’s finals are wide open and It may come down to Rafa and Wayne’s sore arms and the quality of Palmer’s commentary on the night.

See you all there.

Tuesday night tennis

Hi Tuesday swingers

I was talking to the Guru at the leadership forum (No Tuesday night captains went as they know it all) this week and he said that the last 2 weeks of tennis have been the most amazing in living memory. The week before we had torrential rain and yet players pushed through the hardship and common sense barrier to finish matches. In the match between Only Up and Bring it on there was a lake across the court but the battle raged on and on. There was the mystical sight of Rafa walking across the lake  to serve and not getting wet.

We then had All the Presidents men come from behind to inflict mortal wounds on the Samurai Smiths. We understand that Rod was asked to commit Hari Kari by team members but failed this as well. All the Presidents men were brought back to earth a week later in a three hour marathon with Grit (Aptly named), which was only interrupted by Rafa wearing his Martian bike helmet in the clubrooms which emitted a flickering red and blue light through the window and onto the court. I don’t know what was more electrifying Rafa or the play on court. The guru said that Wayne and Russell did not win the match but were simply in front after the last point. This makes sense to me!

The guru was also impressed with Bring it on (who brought nothing last year) when they smashed the Mak Truck. Killer Kate is back and the juddster gave her able support. Kerry and Murray look as though a session of hypnosis is needed from the boss or a good pot and palmer. Where is he!

Weather forecast is bad for Tuesday but nothing will stop the hardy swingers or save the hawks.

Good luck
